Checking Criminal History in Sequim
Start with Sequim Police when city officers investigated the event. Use NextRequest, a written or verbal request, or the Civic Center records contact for the report. Then check the county jail for booking data and District Court I or Superior Court for the judicial file. These records have different owners and purposes, even when they stem from one arrest.
A sound Sequim criminal record check follows five steps:
- Submit a focused request to Sequim Police, naming the date, place, report number, and desired record type.
- Check the Clallam County jail inquiry for present custody and contact Jail Records if the public roster is not enough.
- Use Washington Courts Case Search to identify the case number and court.
- Contact District Court I for limited-jurisdiction documents or the County Clerk for a Superior Court felony file.
- Use WSP WATCH only for the statutory statewide public product.
Each result answers a narrower question. A police narrative is not a disposition, and a repository response is not the complete Sequim case file.
Sequim Police Records Specialists
Sequim's official police page says three full-time police specialists manage records in all formats and department communications systems. Their work is broader than handing out paper reports. The unit processes requests for reports and crime statistics while protecting information that law does not permit the city to release.
The Sequim Police Records page is the source for the unit and request details pictured below.

The records unit is at the Civic Center, 152 West Cedar Street. The city number is 360-683-4139, and the Public Records Officer can be reached at 360-681-3428 or clerk@sequimwa.gov. A collision report may also be available from Washington State Patrol, so identify the investigating agency before requesting it.
Sequim Police Department Records
Sequim Police records can include incident and arrest reports, dispatch-linked records, property or evidence entries, and department statistics. The city may redact victim, minor, medical, financial, or active-investigation details when a lawful exemption applies. Ask for an identifiable existing record rather than requesting that staff research a broad question or create a new summary.
Provide a narrow date range, incident location, report number when known, and the record type. State whether electronic delivery, inspection, pickup, or mail is preferred. Attach identity or authorization only when the record calls for it. Clear terms help the police specialists find the right Sequim record and give a realistic production estimate.
Sequim NextRequest Record Workflow
NextRequest is Sequim's preferred disclosure tool, but it is not the only lawful route. Written and verbal requests remain accepted. A social-media message is not accepted as a public-record request, so sending one does not start the city's response process. Portal users should select the Police Department when seeking a police report rather than routing the request to a general city office.
The official Sequim public-records page explains NextRequest, fees, and response options shown here.

After submission, the city may produce records, say it has no identifiable record and refer the requester elsewhere, provide a reasoned estimate, seek clarification, or deny access under law. The initial response is due within five business days. That deadline does not mean the complete Sequim production will arrive within five days.
Sequim Arrests and Bookings
Sequim does not operate a city jail. A person arrested by Sequim Police ordinarily enters the Clallam County Correctional Facility in Port Angeles. Sequim Police writes the arrest report and probable-cause material. County corrections separately creates the booking file, with intake time, booking number, initial charge entries, custody status, bail or bond data, and release information when public.
Search the county inmate inquiry for current custody. If the person was released or the public view lacks the desired field, call jail business at 360-417-2458 or Jail Records at 360-417-2360. A records request for additional booking material goes to the Sheriff or jail records channel, not Sequim NextRequest. Restricted inmate-file material may require proof of authority under RCW 70.48.100.
Note: A Sequim arrest entry shows an intake event and initial allegations, not guilt or the charge ultimately filed by a prosecutor.
Sequim Criminal Record Copy Fees
Sequim posts threshold-based fees that matter when a police request is large or needs redaction. Payment comes before production. Inspection requires an appointment, and the city warns that a requester should not expect same-day counter delivery. Ask for an estimate when body-camera video or a large set of electronic files is involved.
| Sequim record format | Posted charge |
|---|---|
| Paper copies over 50 pages | $0.15 per page |
| Scanned documents over 100 pages | $0.10 per page |
| Digital production over 40 files | $0.05 per four files |
| Postage or media | Actual cost |
| Body-camera redaction | $0.75 per minute of staff time |
These are city disclosure fees. District Court I, the County Clerk, county Jail Records, and WSP set their own terms for records they hold. Do not send a court-copy order through NextRequest.
Municipal Court Records in Sequim
Sequim has no municipal court. Its official information routes misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, and infractions to Clallam County District Court I at 223 East Fourth Street in Port Angeles. Felony cases go to Superior Court. This distinction is important because a search for a nonexistent Sequim municipal docket will miss the actual file.
| Court Name | Clallam County District Court I; Superior Court for felonies |
|---|---|
| Case Types Heard | District I hears misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, and infractions; Superior Court hears adult felonies |
| Case Lookup Channel | Washington Courts Case Search; Odyssey public case information for Superior Court; court clerk |
| What the Docket Shows | Filed charges, hearings, pleas, orders, disposition, judgment, and sentence events when public |
| Copies & Fees | Request from the court holding the file; certified Superior Court copies are not sold electronically |
District Court I can be reached at 360-417-2560. The Superior Court Clerk's records number is 360-417-2231. The Clallam County criminal court case page explains the county search tools in more depth.
Sequim Records May Take Time
The five-business-day rule is often misunderstood. It governs Sequim's first response, not final delivery. The city can acknowledge the request and give a reasonable estimate when staff must locate records, consult another unit, review exemptions, or redact protected content. A precise request can reduce that work, but it does not remove legal review.
If the city asks for clarification, respond with the report number, a smaller date range, the incident location, and the exact report or media sought. If an investigation is still open, some material may be withheld while other parts are released. Ask for the cited exemption and withholding explanation. If no city record exists, follow the referral to the agency that created it instead of resubmitting the same request through social media.
Where Sequim Records Go
A Sequim event may create several files. Sequim Police makes the local report. County corrections makes the booking record. A prosecutor decides which charge to file, and District Court I or Superior Court creates the case. Courts and agencies report qualifying event and disposition information to the Washington State Patrol under chapter 10.97 RCW.

WATCH is the public repository view. It includes Washington conviction information, specified recent pending-disposition arrests, and registration information. It is not every Sequim report, all nonconviction material, or a complete court document set. For one's own fuller state review, the fingerprint-based WSP channel is the better identity-linked route.
Sequim Collision Record Sources
Collision records demonstrate why agency identity matters in Sequim. A crash investigated by Sequim Police should be requested from the city. Washington State Patrol also provides collision-report channels, which may be the correct source for an event handled by a trooper. The roadway or a Sequim mailing address alone does not prove which agency investigated.
Read the report header, citation, insurance record, or court index for the agency and incident number. Then request the report from that custodian. If the collision led to a criminal charge, the police report and the court case remain distinct. District Court I holds the filed limited-jurisdiction case, while Sequim Police or WSP holds the investigation record. One cannot replace the other.
A collision file may contain material that is not repeated on the criminal docket, such as the investigating officer's narrative and scene details. The docket instead records the charge chosen by the prosecutor, hearing history, pleas, orders, and disposition. Ask each custodian for its own record. If the report number is unknown, give a tight date and time range, the road or intersection, and the investigating agency. Those details help staff find an identifiable record without turning the request into an open-ended research task.
Public Access Rules in Sequim
Sequim Police records are agency records under the Washington Public Records Act. Court files use General Rule 31 and clerk procedures instead. The city may redact or withhold protected content, including victim and minor identifiers, medical or financial details, and qualifying active-investigation material. A denial should state the legal basis.
Key Statutes:
Washington Public Records Act, chapter 42.56 RCW provides access to identifiable agency records subject to exemptions.
Washington State Criminal Records Privacy Act, chapter 10.97 RCW controls criminal-history dissemination and correction rights.
General Rule 31 governs public court-record access.
Request the police report from Sequim, the booking file from county Jail Records, and the case document from the proper clerk. That division follows legal custody and avoids asking one office to release another office's file.
Sequim Record Context and Jurisdiction
Washington OFM estimated Sequim's population at 8,410 on April 1, 2025. The city sits in the Dungeness Valley and rain shadow along the US 101 corridor. Tourism, an older population, and proximity to Jamestown S'Klallam jurisdiction can place different agencies near the same event. A Sequim place name is therefore a starting clue, not proof of record ownership.
City statistics also require careful labels. Calls for service are not the same as police reports. Reports are not the same as arrests. Arrests are not the same as filed cases, and filed cases do not all end in conviction. Use official annual statistics for system context, but rely on the specific police file and court disposition when reconstructing one event.
A request involving the US 101 corridor may need an agency check before any form is filed. Look at the citation, incident number, booking agency, or court entry for the creator's name. Sequim Police records stay with the city. A WSP investigation follows state disclosure channels. A tribal record belongs to the sovereign agency, and the county portal cannot stand in for it. This small check prevents long referral chains and keeps sensitive details from being sent to an office that never held the record.
Historical or missing Sequim court material may also require direct clerk help. Online indexes are discovery tools, not guarantees of every public document. Preserve the exact case number and court location from the result. Those two fields help District Court I or the Superior Court Clerk retrieve the right file and distinguish it from a same-name case elsewhere in Washington.
